When you hear the word Deviant you may think of someone who is doing something mischievous, but what you should be thinking about is someone who is stepping away from the norm – just as the owners of Deviant Wolfe Brewing are doing. Johnathan, Kendall, Matt and Shannon are a group of 4 friends who reunited after graduating from the University of Florida. They quickly discovered that they shared the same passions; two of which included making delicious beer and getting people excited about adventure.

The four began going on adventures together, and the boys, Matt and Johnathan began brewing together in a spare bedroom at Matt’s house. Friends and family began to press them on sharing their creations with others, so the guy started serving it at friends’ weddings, gatherings with friends and family, handing out free samples at events as well as their racing buddies. The idea of opening their own brewery was thrown around for three years, they contacted other brewing businesses and were grateful when the businesses shared what worked for them and what didn’t, they began structuring the business and Matt took the time to brew at the Broken Cauldron Taproom And Brewery in order to get experience in production size. Let’s just say that when you put together a manager of engineers and analysts, a Physical Therapist, a Software Developer and a Middle School Science teacher (retired woman of the Navy, 4 years active and 4 years reserve) there is no messing around when it comes to business and getting things done. And boy did they get things done, Deviant Wolfe is now open and I have yet to stop hearing amazing things about their beer, location and themed trivia nights.

If you haven’t stepped inside their brewery yet, then you wouldn’t know that the back space consists of their brewing equipment, since their beer is brewed in house, you also wouldn’t know that they have a kids space during the day that invites families to sit on the comfy couches where toys are just within reach for the kids to keep entertained while Mom, Dad and friends enjoy each others’ company, a changing table in the restrooms and baby proof tables! Both couples are parents and understand the need for a family friendly space.

You also wouldn’t know that they did what they could to keep their space environmentally friendly: the tables are made by Matt and Jonathan with zero chemicals and large enough to invite all your friends to hang out at, the bottom of the bar was built with Pallets from Horstmeyers Feed Store just down the road from Deviant Wolfe. The very talented Mike

from Park & Seventh built the top of the bar which showcases just some of the adventures that both couples have been on. Shannon created a recycled art piece with old bike parts and customers are encouraged to bring and hang their old race medals in exchange for a free beer. They recycle whatever they possibly can, including their spent grain which they pass off to a local farmer in exchange for fresh eggs. Now that’s what I call community!

And it wouldn’t be fit to talk about the interior of Deviant Wolfe without mentioning the massive mountain wall mural painted by the talented Leslie Karen Macmillion; it’s a photo op waiting to happen.

So now that you know what you’re missing out on (if you aren’t already a Deviant Wolfe fan) design wise, what else are you missing out on? Deviant Wolfe holds a fun event with The Tennessee Truffle and Mr. Z’s once a month on the first Friday, they have already partaken in several fun community events and have the taps ready for you with traditional IPAS, Cider (a guest tap), and their goal is to continue to keep 2 sour beers on tap for all you sour lovers.

And if your tummy starts to rumble for something delicious while you’re hanging out at your new favorite place and you just can’t quite make yourself leave…you don’t have to! Deviant Wolfe has teamed up with Mr. Z’s, The Tennessee Truffle, Fuel BBQ, and Christo’s and with their menus on hand you can simply choose what you’re craving and any of the mentioned restaurants will bring it right to you at Deviant Wolfe.

These friends, whose last names make up the name Wolfe (Wolverton and Rolfe) are without a doubt committed to creating something fun for our community, so next time you open the doors pay attention to their logo as it encompasses everything that this new business is about, Community and Adventure. Get out, try something new and be adventurous!
