Sweet Tooth or Not - Mattie's is the new place to be!

I had the pleasure of stepping into the freshly opened Mattie’s in downtown Sanford last week and Brenda (Little Mattie) and her delicious sweets did not disappoint. As I walked in I was immediately drawn to the glass window that showcases Mattie’s delicious cupcakes and then my eyes followed around
the bottom of the case to reveal a beautiful handmade metal bottom (made by Brenda’s talented husband) and then to the vibrant green wall which houses her antique rolling pins and then to the oh so comfy sitting area (with pillows handmade by Brenda) and let’s not forget about the unique whisk lights that hang from her ceiling. Needless to say I was as giddy as a kid in a candy store!

As I started to chat with Brenda it soon became apparent that this isn’t just any bakery, Mattie puts lots of thought and detail into her baked goods! Brenda makes her delicious sweets with organic ingredients and something I’m always on the lookout for as my Mom suffers from celiac…she provides gluten free desserts and is able to make many of her treats suitable for diabetics! How awesome is that! But sweets aren’t the only thing on Mattie’s menu, if you’re in the area for lunch or a light dinner be sure to check out her menu which includes Soups and Sandwiches, Seafood Chowder, Lobster Roll, Shrimp Roll, Smoked Salmon & Avocado sandwich, Jamaican Pulled Pork, Quiche-meatlovers & spinach. YUM! And while I was there I got a peek at her “wine cellar” that’s right folks, Brenda is hoping to serve beer and wine in the near future.

So why did Brenda choose our beloved Sanford for business? Because she too has fond memories or Sanford as a child as many of us do! As a child she would come to Sanford to visit with her father and she remembered the small town feel and walking the streets of Sanford that she now is a vital part of. Another fond childhood memory of hers is baking with her mom, Mattie! That’s right she named her bakery after her Mom and says that they still stand side by side today and make delicious treats together.
