10th Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest!

When: Thursday, October 19, 12 PM – 11:59 PM

Where: West End Trading Co. 202 S Sanford Ave.

What: Come carve for cash and prizes at West End Trading Co. or Celery City Craft (it is the same day as Celery City Mid Week Market). The 327 Ladies Supper Club will be there selling pumpkins to carve for the contest! Profits from the pumpkins go to awesome local charities! Carving must be done ON SITE THIS DAY at West End Trading Co. OR Celery City Craft. Carve anytime during business hours on this day, and voting will start the following day. VOTING LASTS UNTIL HALLOWEEN NIGHT AT MIDNIGHT!

Movie Classics on Magnolia Presents “The Birds”

What: A pair of lovebirds lead to sea gull horror.  Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller set in Bodega Bay, California gives whole new meaning to being dive bombed by a bird.  The story is woven with romantic intrigue and mysteries that culminate in horror.  Tippi Hedren made her screen debut in the film and is joined by Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Veronica Cartwright.

Freaky Friday at West End

Shriekfest 2017-1st Year in Florida

What: Come celebrate the best in indie horror and scifi films and our first year in Orlando! We will bring the best of the Los Angeles Film Festival here! One day only!

Thirty Five short films make up the 2017 line up!  The films come from countries including Australia and the United Kingdom, states including CA, NC, NY, WA, TX, MA, FL, OH, PA, AZ, and MN.  Festival Director Denise Gossett says “I love our shorts program and so does the community, it’s a definite must see!”.

Shriekfest, now in its 17th year, was created in July 2001 by Denise Gossett and has grown into the longest-running and one of the largest horror and sci-fi film festivals in the country. This is also the first year that Shriekfest will be bi-coastal with Shriekfest Orlando on October 21st.  Since its inception, Shriekfest has offered young and upcoming writers, actors, and producers a chance to have their work screened and rated by peers.

Sanford’s interactive fall arts & craft celebration for children

Where: Historic Sanford Welcome Center 230 E. 1st Street

What: The Historic Sanford Welcome Center/Art Walk working alongside Ladies 327 Supper Club to have fall arts & craft themed activities in the courtyard next to the welcome center.

  Little Monster’s Halloween Bash at Red Hill’s Groves

Spooky Star Party

When: Saturday, October 21st, 6pm-9:30pm, October 27th @ 10pm, October 28th @ 8:30pm

Where: Seminole State College, Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Planetarium, 100 Weldon Blvd

What: Join us for an evening of celestial observation, tales from the night sky, science demonstrations, and of course…candy! We encourage everyone to dress up in their Halloween best, and we’ll hold our famous children’s costume contest as well!

Like at all planetarium star parties, admission to the event is completely free! All activities, including the “Into The West” planetarium presentation in the star party, are included.

There will be plenty of space in the star party area for visitors to bring chairs and blankets. The event will take place in the faculty and staff parking lot adjacent to building B and the planetarium, just off College Drive on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus.

Sanford Pumpkin Fest

Where: Historic Sanford Welcome Center 230 E. 1st Street

What: This month’s Sanford Art Walk on October 21st (6-9 PM) is anchored by the Historic Sanford Welcome Center’s “Sanford Pumpkin Fest” show – This month features a fantastic art exhibit from the Artist League of Orange County. Though only ALOC members can submit art this month, the exhibit is as always free and open to the public—there is no admission charge to any of the venues.
The Welcome Center show is a juried art show judged by local judges, and all who attend this event can join in the fun by voting for the People’s Choice Award. The Judge’s Choice award is $100, and People’s Choice Award will earn a lucky artist $50—voting ends at 8:30 and the winner is announced then! Along with the Welcome Center show, area galleries and other venues host art, artwork and artists to showcase area talent with their own unique and individual takes on the main theme, and sometimes their artsy divergence from it.

Jeanine Taylor Folk Art –- Stop by Jeanine Taylor Folk Art for the first look at The Whole SHE-Bang: New Work by Jane Theis. Jane brings us a female-centric and wry new collection of characters including such classics as nuns with guns, boy toys, Moana Lisa, and a few new faces.
Little Fish Huge Pond – Featuring Things that go bump in the night. Folk artist April Hawkins and Sci-fi artist Josh Sechrest bring on the boo!
Sanford Art Walk Background Information
The Sanford Art Walk is a monthly downtown Historic Sanford event, held on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 6-9 PM. Anchored by the Historic Sanford Welcome Center at 230 East First Street, up to a dozen various venues participate in the Art Walk in any given month (venue maps are available at each venue and at the Welcome Center). Come early for the West End/Celery City Craft sponsored Food Truck Bazaar at the corner of 2nd and Palmetto Avenues (5-8 PM). And after the Art Walk, stay late and enjoy dinner or a drink at one of the many fine downtown, historic Sanford businesses.
Sanford brings you the premier “local, downtown, historic, cultural” experience in Central Florida. Incorporated in 1877, Sanford is home to Lake Monroe and the waterfront along the St. John’s River, a bustling downtown historic commercial area with a multitude of local restaurants and bars, and nighttime entertainment throughout downtown and along newly remodeled Sanford Avenue.  Sanford is a bustling, vibrant, and safe city where residents live, work, play, raise families, and retire.

Paranormal Investigation in Downtown Sanford

When: Saturday, October 21st, 8pm-12am

Where: 116 South Park Avenue

What: Come join the Orlandeaux Paranormal Society team of investigators as we conduct real investigations in downtown Sanford, FL. We will be investigating two inside locations, the Wellness Center and the Rosie Lee Company, plus two outdoor locations which have experienced activity in the past years. The investigations will be from 8:00 pm to midnight. We will have three teams and rotate locations. Space is limited to keep the groups small and allow everyone to enjoy the experience.

Spooky Zoo Wild Art & Wine

When: Wed. Oct. 25, 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

What: Enjoy a special SPOOKY evening at the Zoo with wine and hors d’oeuvres while painting an animal portrait. Art instructors will guide you to create your own monstrous masterpiece as you meet live animals up close. Everyone is invited to dress up for this spooktacular evening of Halloween fun! Halloween at Sanford Brewing Co.

What: Haunted Sanford presents the Historical Ghost Walk in beautiful downtown Sanford! During this walk, we will regale you with tales of old and new concerning ghostly experiences in the downtown area, culminating with a walk to an actual haunted building! Scary stories aside, this walking tour is for all ages. We will present an overview of ghostly activity and then walk the streets telling the historical stories gathered from the people who live in Sanford themselves. Tickets are $15 dollars and can be purchased at the eventbrite link or at the shop before the day of the tour because availability is limited. You can bring water or any other soft beverage on this tour.

Movie in the Square-The Nightmare Before Christmas

Night of Fright: Ghost Stories

When: Friday October 27th, 7PM & 8:30PM

Where: Seminole State College, Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Planetarium, 100 Weldon Blvd

What: Join master storyteller “Country Joe” Rosier for an evening of spooky ghost stories. This show is a live solo theatrical performance inside the planetarium and includes both visual and sound effects.

7 P.M. performance will be suitable for children ages 6 and up

8:30 P.M. performance will be recommended for ages 14 and up

Admission: Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and seniors (55+), and FREE for Seminole State students, faculty, and staff with college ID.

Haunted Tours at the Museum

Planetarium Show: Into the West: Astronomical Origins of Halloween

What: “Into The West” conjures up the history of Halloween from its beginnings five millennia ago in what is now Great Britain. This show examines the Britons and the Celts, two groups of ancient peoples who laid the foundation for the modern-day Halloween celebration. The Gaelic festival of Samhain celebrated the end of the harvest season, and from this most important time came the origins of trick-or-treating, the carving of pumpkins and ghostly lore — all inspired by a small, famous cluster of stars in the constellation Taurus known as the Pleiades. Be swept away in our journey ”Into The West.”

Halloween Party at MMA

What: Monster Martial Arts will be hosting a halloween party the same night as Mall-o-ween from 6pm-8pm. They will be giving out candy, treats and goody bags. It will be an open night so more than just members of the karate school will be allowed to attend. They will have games and costume contests planned for the evening as well as prizes for the winners. Customers are encouraged to trick-or-treat around the mall and join the party when finished. We will be providing a fun and down to earth atmosphere where everyone can enjoy themselves.
