The Emil Buehler Planetarium is proud to partner with Dark Side of Saturn Productions, to host Space, directed by Kevin G. Becker. This science fiction drama made its premiere at the 2016 Orlando International Fringe Festival and won the Critics Choice Award for Technical Achievement. The Genesis IV and the associated uniforms were designed and constructed by Evan Miga. Video production by Walter Lowe of Blackburst Entertainment.
Space is an original work by local writer Corey Volence. Inspired by the works of the late Sam Shepard, Edward Albee, Samuel Beckett, and Jean-Paul Sartre.
Starring local actors Ashleigh Ann Gardner, Brenna Arden, Chaz Krivan, and Jean-Michel Rousseau.
The four person crew of the Genesis IV are a month away from concluding a five year journey to colonize a new planet. What could possibly go wrong?
Join the crew onboard the Genesis IV in this immersive staging of Space at the beautiful Emil Buehler Planetarium. You will be transported by the intimate confines and the passing stars of the Genesis IV.
A roundtable discussion with the actors and planetarium director Derek Demeter on the science of space travel will be presented after each performance.
An Orlando Sentinel review of Space during Fringe Festival called the show “top-quality”. Acknowledging what may have been “top-quality” at Fringe can be improved upon, this partnership with the Planetarium will allow us to push far beyond our previous capabilities.

Kids Classics in Sanford
Apart from these events, there are always some Sanford kids classics:
- Walking/Biking on the Riverwalk
- Feeding the ducks at the pond by the senior center
- Play at Park on Park: the shadow of beautiful oak trees makes this the most idyllic playground in town and even on hotter days pretty bearable (you’d be surprised)
- A visit at Ft. Mellon Park playground and (currently, i.e. March, only open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, $2) Ft Mellon Park Splash Pad: can’t beat playing on this huge playground and then cooling off on the splash pad.
- Sanford Derby Park
Racing down the hill at Sanford’s Derby Park is so much fun! We love to bring the kids’ “vehicles” aka tricycle, bike and Plasma car with us and have them race all they want. After that, the Derby Park playground is another favorite of mine because it is not close to the road and offers a good variety. Here is a video of a recent visit at Sanford’s Derby Park Playground (kids racing and a minor accident included). - Love horses? Head over to Hidden Palms Ranch for their horse experience or go for a relaxing ride through natural Florida.
- A visit at White’s Red Hill Groves to pick fresh fruit and veggies.
- Become a part of the growing group Sanford Rocks, collect, decorate and hide your rocks around Sanford and bring a smile to someone. Be sure to become a part of the Facebook group as some people post when they find rocks and you might just see one of yours as well as finding out when the next painting party will be!
Things to do with the kids on rainy days
How about a visit at the Seminole Towne Center mall so the kids can let out all their energy in the play area or ride train (I have to admit though, the $4 price is a bit steep)? Have you tried the stuffed ride-on animals in the center court? Definitely a treat after a shopping trip gone well…
Or if your kids are a bit older you could try a visit at the Sanford Museum (520 E First Street) to teach them a bit of Sanford’s history. You won’t be disappointed!
Last but not least, visit the Sanford Library (150 N Palmetto Avenue)! They have a great selection of children’s books and my boys’ love taking home new books each time we go! In addition to that, the library offers a fun story time, divided by age groups. The dates during Spring Break are as follows:
- Saturday, March 17th at 12:30pm: Teen Game Changers Club: Game Changers meets weekly. Get together with your friends and challenge each other to fun board games and role playing! Open to Middle and High School students! Free. No registration required.
Click here for the Libraries March Calendar!
- Satisfy yours and your kids sweet tooth at Wondermade!
- Bowling at Airport Lanes (Have you been since they redid the entire inside?)
Your kids love spending time with you so don’t forget that you can have fun at home to, check out these fun ideas from MacaroniKid.com!
Please remember, we are constantly adding to this list and updating this article to provide you with even more fun things to do during Spring Break, so check back often!
As Sanford mommy, I am curious though: where do you like to take your kids to? What are your favorite places and things to do with the kids in Sanford? Any tips you’d like to share with other moms? What would you like to see more of in Sanford? Share your thoughts below 😉
