Like many kids growing up, we always roasted marshmallows over a bonfire to make s’mores, but Jenn and Nathan, owners of Downtown Sanford’s beloved Wondermade, have given the idea of marshmallows a whole new meaning.
About 7 years ago, Nathan gave Jenn a candy thermometer for Christmas along with a recipe for marshmallows with the idea for a fun at-home date night. After creating their first batch of passion fruit flavored marshmallows, which made over 100, they began giving them out to friends who, to no surprise, were amazed! After being asked if some could be purchased as gifts, their idea for Wondermade was born.
I was given the opportunity to attend one of Wondermade’s monthly date night workshops which they started about 3 years ago after they moved into their current location where they were able to open a retail space and a kitchen for people to decorate their own marshmallows.
Our instructor, Dakota, was very friendly and funny and provided us with some fun facts about Wondermade and marshmallows in general. For example, did you know that gelatin, a main ingredient in marshmallows, is good for sore throats?! So next time you aren’t feeling well, hop over to the store and pick up some ofyour favorite flavors of marshmallows. I recommend their Gold & Champagne box, which has real 24k gold in it (also kid friendly, since the mallows cook at 240 degrees causing the alcohol to cook out, sorry parents!). But gold and champagne seems like a pretty good cold remedy to me!
Once we got the tour of the kitchen, we got to decorating our marshmallows. We were offered 3 different flavors to choose from; peppermint, vanilla and bourbon. While vanilla is a constant flavor for the class, there is always a boozy and a seasonal flavor offered as well. Once we picked our flavors, we were given cookie cutters and different toppings to decorate, as well as bags to package them up and take home to eat (where they didn’t last long).
Afterwards, attendees of the class are offered either an ice cream of their choice or a s’more, which Dakota hand makes and roasts right in front of you! They always have a large variety of flavors such as key lime, birthday cake, and bourbon which are some of the more popular flavors. And if this is something you’d like to do with kids or family, they also offer a family workshop once a month! Along with being able to cater for birthday parties, field trips or private events as well.
Wondermade has been a favorite sweet spot of ours since first moving to Sanford. Even if you don’t go for a class, go in, pick out your favorite marshmallow and #tasteadventure.
