080a6445I’m just going to start this off by saying that it wasn’t until a month or so ago that I had even heard of a salt room and obviously knew even less. So, when Julia, owner of Antidote Apothecary & Spa invited the three Sanford365 ladies to try out her brand spankin’ shiny new salt room, I was excited and intrigued and of course we all said YES!

Below you will find the information from AntidoteApothecaryandSpa.com on the history, benefits and science behind the Salt Room, as well as pricing, but first I want to allow each of us to share our experience (Sumalee was unable to join us this morning, so you’ll see notes from both Claudia and myself).

Antique toys to keep the kids occupied while enjoying their salt room session.

As I peek into the salt room, I’m already intrigued by the large grains of salt that cover the floor, but 080a6394before entering we are asked to take our shoes off and leave our clean socks on or wear booties to keep the room sanitized. As we “prep” for the room Julia answers some of our questions and then points to the Halo Generator that sits on the wall just outside of the Salt Room. The generator comes all the way from Europe and creates the 080a6415magic that happens within the salt room. It seems that there is a pretty bit misconception with salt rooms and that is that you just sit in a room filled with salt, well that’s just not quite how it works, it’s actually considered a treatment and an effective one at that.

You see, the Halo generator actually allows for salt to be poured into it, then
grinds the salt; creating very fine salt that is then released into the air as salt mist. It can be compared to relaxing near the shore at the beach, not just because of the salt mist but also because Julia knows how to create a relaxing atmosphere and you’re likely to catch some z’s.

Delicious tea is served after your salt room session

I do not suffer from any of the below conditions, but I can definitely say that I was very relaxed and had a clear nasal cavity by the time our session was over.

Salt rooms are becoming very popular and I’m very happy that Julia has taken the leap and brought one to all of us, so be sure to take advantage of it and if you have any questions about the salt room please feel free to contact Julia.

Breathe Easier with Salt Therapy

Salt Therapy, also known as halotherapy, has been getting considerable attention for its health benefits. This relaxing and effective treatment isn’t just a passing fancy—for centuries, people have sought out the healing properties of salt within the salt caves of Eastern Europe. These strikingly beautiful caverns are lined with naturally-occurring salt crystals, which drip slowly down the walls to create exquisite salt crystal formations. Known for their healing properties as well as their beauty, these caves were sought out by monks and healers throughout the centuries for their efficacy in healing respiratory and skin disorders.

The air of these caves is deeply suffused with salt which provides antimicrobial and disinfecting elements.  In addition, negative ions are dispersed into the air and can help protect the body from pollution and induced physical stress.  Researchers found that exposure to negative ions increased levels of the protective antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) which is a natural anti-inflammatory.   Salt caves are known to relieve symptoms from respiratory illness such as asthma, pneumonia and COPD, as well as dermal conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, while also improving overall mood and mental clarity.

At Antidote Apothecary & Spa, we’ve taken the old-world techniques of halotherapy and brought them to the modern world with our own salt therapy room. Enjoy an atmosphere of peaceful relaxation while breathing air suffused with the healing power of salt.

Salt therapy is an effective way to improve numerous conditions including:

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Eczema
  • Acne
  • Stress
  • Migraines
  • Sinusitis
  • Chronic Cough
  • Psoriasis
  • Rashes and Inflammation of the skin
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Hang Overs

The Science Behind the Salt

Your mother may have advised you to gargle with salt water as a child in order to cure a sore throat, and with good reason. Salt is a natural disinfectant, and also has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, and when inhaled or absorbed through the skin it provides a wonderful cleansing, detoxifying effect on the respiratory and dermal systems.

Salt also produces negative ions, which have the added benefit of improving metal clarity and alertness, as well as flushing out toxins. Negative ions work by attaching themselves to contaminates such as dust, spores and mold, causing them to drop harmlessly to the ground where they can be easily removed. When absorbed by the body, they may have a cleansing effect by filtering out free radicals and other toxins. As a natural negative ionizer, salt therapy has also been demonstrated to improve sleep cycles, reduce the effects of depression and anxiety, as well as improving cognitive function. The cleansing effects of salt therapy will leave you feeling clean and clear—inside and out.

At Antidote Apothecary & Spa, we invite you to take a tour of our spa, shop our array of natural skin care, and taste our organic herbal teas.

Claudia’s Salt Room Visit with the Kids

Salt Room pictures recently popped up on a lot of my Orlando friends’ Instagram and Facebook accounts and I grew more excited every time, hoping that this natural treatment would also finally make its way closer to us. Orlando is quite a drive for us (especially with kids) so I kept waiting patiently.

img_1192When Julia told me about her plans to open a Salt Room right here in Sanford earlier this year I was so happy!! After lots of research, preparation and hard work, Julia couldn’t have timed the grand opening of the salt room better: cold & flu season is here and, of course, my kids (Nicolas, 5 and Lukas, 3) caught the first round of germs at school. Nicolas had to stay home from school last week but was fit to go again Monday. His cough however still sounded pretty scary. I knew though that is was mainly chest congestion (and a bit left in his nose) so I was prepared  to deal with it for a couple of weeks (that’s usually what it takes to clear up this type of congestion in him). Of course, now that the salt room is within a short drive of our home I decided to try out the salt room with the boys.

img_1202At first I was a bit nervous how they would behave (the boys are a little on the wild side, if you know what I mean) but once we were inside, the whole experience felt like a visit to the beach or better yet, a winter wonderland. My little one even asked me if the large salt corns were snow (hard to believe neither one of my boys have ever seen snow – I know, the Florida life!). Nicolas ad Lukas played for 45 straight minutes with sand toys while breathing in the salty air. They made the toy trucks disappear under mountains of salt and built little salt castles while mommy lounged on the chair (just like I had on Monday at my previous visit). I have to admit I almost even dozed off, which was due to another great side effect of the salt room: relaxation! I came prepared with a few books in case the kids would get bored but I only got my oldest one to read a little with me before the time was up.

The effect of the salt room therapy was amazing for Nicolas: the next day his cough was about 80% cleared up! It seemed like we skipped about a week in the healing process! The congestion is pretty much gone! I’ve always been a big supporter of natural health treatments and this is yet another example of how effective they truly are! Next time the kids are congested I know where to go 😉
