The Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center transported Magnolia Avenue back to the Golden Age of Hollywood on Saturday night for their fundraising event Puttin’ on the Ritz– and I was one of the lucky attendees!
I adore all things vintage, so I was beyond thrilled to dress up with fellow theatre enthusiasts. The event’s aim was to raise funds for the theater, as well as to celebrate the work of individuals who contribute their talents to the theatre’s productions throughout the year.
The nostalgic evening began with a flood of guests in sequins and suspenders gathering in front of the theatre for hors d’oeuvres and cocktails on the red carpet. I was happy to see some of my favorite local vendors, including Shantell’s, the Quiet Man, and Magnolia Square Market providing the food.
Actors walked the crowd in character, and quickly fell into an outdoor show featuring a director searching for a starlet. You can imagine my surprise when I was pulled on stage along with three other ladies for our “auditions”! We had a ton of fun, and even when it started to rain, the cast and crew moved the whole show indoors. I loved seeing so many amazing performers flock to a theatre right here in our historic district to practice their art, and it reminded me of all the fun I had performing at the Wayne Densch when I was younger. I’m so glad the theatre is still a hub for artistic tradition in Sanford, and can’t wait to see the new Ritz sign!
If you wish you could escape to a different decade, the Wayne Densch is serving up an amazing retro event this fall:
On November 14th 2015, put on your dancing shoes and RSVP for Puttin’ on the Ritz, the annual Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center fundraiser, featuring a silent auction with amazing items (airline tickets anyone?), entertainment by local talent and delicious food from local restaurants, set in the beautiful historic theater. This year’s event will transport us to the 1940s and the Golden Age of Hollywood, so get in touch with your inner retro movie star and join the rest of the town for a beautiful evening on the red carpet!
