The Shape of Sound and Light at the Sanford Planetarium

May 8, 2015 @ 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Shape of Sound and Light at the Sanford Planetarium

Join us for “Dome Designers”, a new series of programs featuring local Central Florida artists and their work presented on the planetarium dome.

Featured Artist: Synthestruct

Synthestruct is a local audio/visual artist whose interest in sound and wave mechanics has led to her fascination with cymatics and audio-driven design. Soniforms combines the senses and gives visual form to the performance’s electronic soundscapes, projected inside the planetarium using our fulldome system.

What is “Cymatics”?

Cymatics is the study of visible sound. Typically the surface of a plate, diaphragm, or membrane is vibrated, and regions of maximum and minimum displacement are made visible in a thin coating of particles, paste or liquid. Different patterns emerge in the excitatory medium depending on the geometry of the plate and the driving frequency.
