Fancy Hats, Live Music, Casino Tables, Laughter and Cheering are just some of the things that were seen and heard at this year’s Juleps & Jockeys event. A fun filled day put on by Celery City Craft and Ladies 327 Supper Club, promoted by Sanford365 and sponsored by Jack Daniels. All in efforts to bring the Kentucky Derby fun to Sanford and to raise money for a local not-for-profit organization in the process.
Live Music filled the air and the Kentuck Derby prep races played on the T.V. while guests played at one or more of the 5 casino tables that were set up for participants to try their hand at winning casino chips. Winning chips were then exchanged for raffle tickets, winners could then place tickets in baskets of their choosing and later in the day winners were chosen at random from each basket. Money from the casino tables was donated to Freedom Ride, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives and experiences of individuals with disabilities in the Central Florida area through therapeutic horseback riding and related activities. This year $704.00 was raised and we are so thankful to all who participated and made that donation possible.
While some played at the casino tables, others chatted in the Celery City courtyard with their Kentucky Derby drink in hand, grabbed a bite to eat from the food trucks, played a game of corn hole or simply tapped their toes to the beat of the music. But as the clock ticked and the Kentucky Derby race neared, everyone stopped what they were doing and locked their eyes on the T.V. as they cheered loudly for their horse to win during the 2 most exciting minutes in sports. This year tensions were high as for the first time ever in Derby history a disqualification took place. Winner Maximum Security was ripped of his title when riders objected, race officials did choose to disqualify Maximum Security and Country House took the title.
We kept everyone smiling though as we called all our runners-up for our best dressedcategories. The crowed cheered on their favorites for best dressed Male, Female, Couples and Best Hat and each winner took home a basket of goodies valued at around $100 each all thanks to local businesses who donated items for each of our prize and raffle baskets!
